Quilt of Honor Celebrating a Lifetime of Service
Some years ago, the father of a friend I worked with was given a very bad prognosis, he was dying and didn't have much time left. There was nothing anyone could do to help, except pray and of course, make a quilt. This gentleman served in the Navy and after discharge was a policeman until his retirement.
To honor his commitment and lifetime of service I designed this quilt combining the Police flag with an American eagle and the Navy seal. We wanted him to have the quilt before he died, so my fellow teachers and I all pitched in to cut, assemble, pin, quilt, and finish the quilt in just over 2 weeks.
We presented it to our friend to take to her father just before she left to stay with him.
We wrote prayers on small pieces of muslin and layered them in with the batting before quilting and prayed over the quilt when we were finished.
Never take your quilting for granted or think it isn't important. This quilt was a work of love that brought a little bit of peace to all concerned. When this man was wrapped up in his quilt he was being hugged by many people who had him in their hearts - he was not alone.
Quilts are legacies filled with hope, bound by stories, and created with love.
